About This Product▾

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Coin Program was the official numismatic tribute to the Games of the XXVII Olympiad, issued jointly by The Perth Mint and the Royal Australian Mint. Its eight $100 gold coins depict the athlete’s journey in four themes: The Journey Begins, Dedication, Preparation and Achievement. The two Preparation coins, featuring a shot putter and an athlete, were released in 1999 ahead of the Games but bear the year 2000, making them among the first coins of the new millennium. Each coin is struck to a high proof finish from 10 grams of 99.9% pure gold and carries The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, with the reverse design framed by a coloured border of 15 official Olympic sport pictograms. Six of the eight gold coins in the program featured colour, a first for both Australian legal tender and official Olympic coins. The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, together with the coin’s monetary denomination. Coins are supplied as bullion grade and may display minor cosmetic imperfections or wear to the capsule while maintaining their stated 10g gold content and 99.9% purity.
